Samford Volleyball Falls To Southeast Missouri

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. ---- The Samford volleyball team could not get past Southeast Missouri Saturday as they fell to the Redhawks, 3-1. The Bulldogs will return home winless on the weekend, but will begin to prepare to host Jacksonville State on Wednesday.
In game one, Samford (6-18, 1-9 OVC) started out with the two-point lead, but Southeast Missouri (11-13, 5-5 OVC) quickly tied the game and took over. The Redhawks dominated the game from that point on, leading by as much as 10. The Bulldogs came back to cut the lead in half, but Southeast Missouri would take the first game, 30-25.
Southeast Missouri quickly put six points on the board in game two, but Samford would come back to tie it at six on a kill by outside hitter Alyssa Trimpe. However, the Redhawks would press forward, keeping the lead at four for most of the game. With the score at 28-24, the Bulldogs would go on a 6-2 run, sparked by kills from right side hitter Sheridan Stanhohr and middle blocker Angela Dempski, to take the game, 30-28.
Samford scored the first points in game three, but Southeast Missouri would not let the Bulldogs have the lead. The Redhawks led by as much as 10 again, dominated this game, and would go on to win by nine (30-22).
Southeast Missouri totally dominated the fourth and final game, never really giving Samford a chance to catch up. The Redhawks won, 30-8.
Trimpe posted her second consecutive double-double tonight as she led in kills with 12 and racked up 19 digs for the Bulldogs. Defensive specialist/setter Courtney Gay also posted a double-double against the Redhawks with 36 assists and 15 digs. Defensive specialist Sarah Gardner tallied 23 digs, while Stangohr had nine kills and 11 points. Middle blocker Kirstein Sosnowski posted a .364 hitting percentage.
Next, Samford will play host to Jacksonville State this Wednesday. Match play is set for 7 p.m.
