Samford Women’s Golf To Play In Chris Banister Classic

--- Bulldogs hope to better previous 10th place performance ---

Oct. 16, 2006

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University women’s golf team will tee off today in the Chris Banister Golf Classic hosted by Jacksonville State. The 12th annual tournament, held at Silver Lakes Golf Course, is a tribute to the late Chris Banister, a former Jacksonville State assistant golf coach.

Last year, Samford finished 10th in this tournament (325-334-339 = 998). Host team Jacksonville State is the reigning tournament champion. Jacksonville State has won the last four tournaments including a Spring tournament in 2005. The only other repeat champion is Troy State, who won the title in the first two year of the tournament in 1996 and 1997.

The last time the Bulldogs were in action was Sept. 25-26, at the Fred Marx Invitational, where they finished fourth overall. Freshman Heather Arnold also finished fourth overall.

The Chris Banister Classic was named in honor of former JSU assistant golf coach Chris Banister. The University has also established an endowed scholarship fund to help young golfers in the community achieve the goals they have set for themselves.
