BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches today at the University of Central Florida Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Bulldogs fell to the Golden Knights of UCF and the Utah Valley State Wolverines.

The Bulldogs (0-4) lost their first match of the day, 3-0, to host team Central Florida (3-2). Samford lost the first game, 16-30, and the second and third games 14-30. The Bulldogs recorded a hitting percentage of .082, compared to the Golden Knights’ .371. Freshman Sheridan Stangohr led the Bulldogs with an attack percentage of .294 and a total of 6 kills.

Samford lost the second match of the day to Utah Valley State College in three-straight games, 25-30, 20-30, 18-30. Stangohr posted nine of the team’s 38 kills, and Sophomore Jackie Jaszcz and Junior Robin Bishop each led the team in hitting percentage with .500.

“In game one against UCF, we definitely didn’t play to our potential,” Bulldog Head Coach Michelle Durban said. “We came out with more energy the second game and were able to do some things better, but we just couldn’t get over the hump with a win.”

The Bulldogs will try again tomorrow in their final match at the Central Florida Tournament against the Lady Paladins of Furman University. Match play begins at 11 a.m., EDT.
