Huffman, Misner Advance To Semifinals of Southern Intercollegiate

ATHENS, Ga.The Samford University men’s tennis team advanced two netters to the semifinals of the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Division III Singles, hosted by the University of Georgia this weekend.

Senior netter Stuart Misner faced off with junior netter Sam Huffman in the Division III semifinals on Sunday, Sept. 10. Huffman defeated Misner, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the finals to take on East Tennessee’s Travis Sandlant on Monday. Huffman’s hopes of a Division III SI Championship was cut short by Sandlant as he defeated the Bulldog netter, 7-6(2), 6-4.

On his way to the semifinals, Misner defeated Virginia Tech’s Eduardo Pinto (6-1, 6-4), Ricardo Rojas from East Tennessee (6-1, 6-4), and Billy Mulligan of the Florida Gators (7-6, 3-6, 6-0). Huffman defeated Daniel Balug of Georgia State (7-5, 6-2), Florida’s Jeff Barton (6-2, 6-2), Tennessee’s Jeff Thornton (6-1, 6-2), and finally Florida State’s number two netter Drew Bailey (7-6, 6-4).

Senior Manuel Miletic made it to the third round of the Division II singles in Flight I, but was defeated by Aaron Carpenter of Duke University, 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles action, Renan Silveira and Sam Huffman advanced to the third round of the Division II Flight I before being ousted by the Tchervenoachki/Sandgren duo of Tennessee.

The Bulldogs netters will be back in action next weekend, Sept. 22-24, as they travel to Chattanooga to participate in the UTC Fall Invitational.
