Sept. 21, 2006
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford volleyball team opens conference play this weekend with two matches against Tennessee foes, Austin Peay and Tennessee State.
The Bulldogs will travel to Clarksville, Tenn., to face the Governors of Austin Peay on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. They will then go down the road a little bit on Saturday to the Music City to play an afternoon match with the Tennessee State Lady Tigers at 2 p.m.
The Bulldogs are on a three-match win streak, with their latest win coming Tuesday night over the Kennesaw State Owls, 3-1. This win improved Samford’s record to 5-9 on the season.
“We’ve won three straight matches,” said Head Coach Michelle Durban, “but we are starting conference now. We’ve got an exciting challenge ahead of us, so we are going to stay positive and focused and in doing that, hopefully we will accomplish the goals that we have set for ourselves.”
Austin Peay (2-9) comes off a 10-day rest period after falling to Belmont in five games. The Governors are looking for their third win on the season and their first win at home.
Tennessee State currently sits at fifth in the conference, and hosts their second home match of the season. Samford leads the series with the Lady Tigers, 8-4, and the Bulldogs look to extend that lead to five games.
After this weekend, Samford will be on the road for a week taking on Jacksonville State on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m., and Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs return home the next week to play host to Tennessee State on Friday, Oct. 6, and then Austin Peay on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m.
