Sept. 25, 2006
MONROE, La. ---- It was a great first day at the Fred Marx Invitational for the Samford women’s golf team as they sat at the top of the leaderboard for most of the day. Samford currently sits in a tie with Sam Houston State for third place overall, and freshman Heather Arnold is the number two golfer of the day.
In the first day of the tournament, Samford shot 316 in round one and 300 in round two.
“Three hundred is the best that we’ve ever had since I’ve been here I think,” said Head Coach Ian Thompson. “It’s been a great day for us, and we are pleased to be in the position we are in right now.”
Arnold shot 75-71=146 (-1) to take the number two position on the day. Fellow freshman Bulldog Katelyn Stanier follows behind in a tie at 13, shooting 80-75=155 (+3). Junior Courtney Warr shot 81-75=156 (+3) to put her in a tie for 15th place. Sophomore Maria Troche is currently tied for 20th, shooting 80-79=159, and rounding out the Samford team is Kellie O’Connell shooting 82 in both rounds for a total of 164.
“We started to see the potential in last week’s tri-match,” said Thompson, “and now we are just enjoying the fact that we are in the hunt. Again, I’m pleased that we are in the position that we are in, and we’ll just give it everything we’ve got tomorrow.”
Samford will finish out the tournament tomorrow playing 18 holes with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
