Samford Women’s Tennis Heads To Tuscaloosa

--- Bulldogs prepare for second tournament of fall season ---

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University women’s tennis team heads to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Friday as the Bulldogs enter the 20th Annual Roberta Alison Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama this weekend.

Samford will play in its second tournament of the fall season, as the Bulldogs last played on September 16-18, at the 2005 Ole Miss Fall Tournament in Oxford, Miss.

A total of 12 teams and 74 players will compete in the three-day event. In addition to host Alabama, in-state schools AUM, Birmingham-Southern and South Alabama will all be represented. Other schools competing will be Mississippi State, Memphis, Florida State, Iowa, USF, Georgia Southern and Louisiana-Monroe.

The Bulldogs field an experienced team this season as they return all but one member of the 2004-05 squad that placed fourth at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships. Additionally, juniors Christie Baker, Bethany Benson, Sarah McKey and Emily White were also members of the 2003-04 team that won the OVC Championship. Sophomores Katie McMiller and Lauren Pitcher return as well and Amber Dyar will compete as a freshman after taking a medical redshirt last season.

The Bulldogs have added two talented freshmen to the mix in Whitney Warren and Whitney Flesher. Sophomore transfer Anna Jackson also joined the team this season.

The tournament will include individual flights of singles and doubles play. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
